Habbo Hotel, a Teen Networking Site
|
Habbohotel.ca
is a social networking website owned and operated by Sulake Corporation.
Habbohotel.ca is aimed at teenagers, and it combines the two concepts of
chat rooms, which are presented in the form of rooms in a virtual Hotel and
user pages which are displayed on the website. The original conception of
Habbo, namely Mobiles Disco, was created as a small project by two Finnish
men, Sampo Karjalainen and Aapo Kyrölä.
The
HabboHotel.ca chat room that make up
each website are large, computer-generated graphics that use isometric
projection. The chat rooms are located inside the virtual Hotel, which is
referred to as Habbo Hotel.
The chat rooms are presented as Hotel
rooms, just as inside a real Hotel. The chat room is accessible from the
website and can be launched via a popup window.
The user pages are displayed on the website and allow members to creatively
express themselves and share content with each other. The pages are tightly
linked to the chat room and users can access each other's profiles via the
chat room. The user pages also allow users to create groups, in which
members can join and partake in the discussion forums.
The service is centred around Habbos, virtual representations of its
members. Each character has a different name, and is identified solely by
this name. The service maintains it's revenue from credits, which are bought
using real-life currency. These credits are then used to buy products such
as virtual furniture for placement inside the Hotel rooms and stickers which
can be placed on the user pages.
The service began in 2000 and has expanded to 31 local communities,[1] with
new communities opening in Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela. As of January
2008, over 86 million avatars have been created worldwide and there are over
8 million unique visitors to the Habbo websites around the world every
month,[1] with 75,000 avatars being created every day.
